Serena Williams on Monday batted off questions about close friend Meghan Markle and Megxit — cracking a smile as she teased the reporter, “But good try.”
The 38-year-old tennis ace had just sat down at a press conference after her Australian Open win against Anastasia Potapova when the opening question was about her “good friend, Meghan Markle.”
Williams listened calmly as she was asked her feelings on Megxit, which the reporter called “extraordinary and historic,” as well as whether she had spoken to her pal since she quit the royal family.
“Yeah, I have absolutely no comments on anything with that,” Williams replied sternly.
“But, good try,” she added with a smile. “You tried. You did good.”
Williams and Markle became fast friends when they first met at the 2010 Super Bowl in Miami.
The tennis star and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, were guests at Markle’s May 2018 royal wedding to Prince Harry, and Williams also helped throw her friend’s high-profile New York baby shower before the birth of baby Archie.
Markle has also been a regular at Williams’ matches, including in New York at last year’s US Open, where she joined Ohanian as well as the sport star’s mom, Oracene Price, and sister Venus in the family’s box.
