Western Togoland attacks: 1 dead, 30 arrested by security forces

Ghanaian Military and police deployed to salvage the early morning attack in the Volta region by militia of Western Togoland secessionists have reportedly put the situation under control.

Journalists on the ground reports that one person has been killed from the exchange of gun power that ensued between security forces and the militia with another critically injured. The deceased is said to be an observer and not a member of the attackers and it is unknown which side’s gunshot fatally hit him.

The police have reportedly arrested about 30 individuals involved in the attack.

The Western Togoland Militants this dawn laid siege on the town of Sogakope, blocking roads leading to the town. Simultaneous attacks were also launched on Juapong and its catchment area.

Pictures and videos from eyewitnesses showed tyres being burnt and massive traffic that had built on the main road leading into the affected towns.

Order has been restored for the time being and traffic has started flowing, Ghanatribune.com has learned. Watch a video report from by a UTV correspondent on the situation below.
